Memorandum of Understanding with the Uganda Dental Association

The Hungarian Dental Association considers it extremely important to build contact and cooperation with foreign dental associations, therefore it strives to continuously expand this network  with new foreign partner associations.

At this year's SymposiumSzeged conference, on April 26, the Hungarian Dental Association signed a cooperation agreement with the Uganda Dental Association (UDA), which has a truly special antecedent and goal.

As previously reported,  Prof. Dr. Katalin Nagy, president of Hungarian Dental Association, spent a week and a half in Uganda at her own expense at the beginning of 2024, where she volunteered to help those in need in extremely poor conditions in cooperation with the Canadian Build Your Smile Foundation and the Uganda Dental Association, and also gave a presentation at a conference.

The foundation plans and administers dental care in rural areas of Uganda on an annual basis, and thereby aims to provide dental care mainly to rural villages, farms, underserved and poor communities, to train a dedicated, helpful and well-trained team of caregivers who can provide adequate care to the population between face-to-face missions and to provide high quality training during in-person visits to the under-qualified professionals working locally.

A delegation of 8 people arrived from Uganda for further training, whose air tickets and accommodation expenses were financed by:

  • Dr. Alessandro Pozzi (Italy),
  • Dr. Howard Gluckman (South Africa)
  • Dr. Henriette Lerner (Germany)
  • Dr. Ken Serota (Canada)
  • Dr. Párkányi László (Hungary)

The main aim of the agreement concluded between the Hungarian and Uganda Dental Associations is to establish the joint activities of the two associations as members of the World Dental Organization (FDI), namely to apply for the World Dental Development Fund announced by FDI.

This Fund aims to improve oral health globally, primarily through the establishment of innovative prevention and access programs in disadvantaged populations. WDDF illustrates FDI's commitment to its members and the funded projects reflect the core values and principles of FDI, which are integrity, a culture of inclusiveness, excellence, and ethical behaviour.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by:

  •  Professor Katalin Nagy, president of the Hungarian Dental Association,
  • Professor István Gera, past president of HDA,

  • Professor Biren Yajnik, President of the Ugandan Dental Association

  • Dr. Maria Gorreti Nakyonyi vice president of UDA

  • Dr. Juliet Katamba Nabbanja principal dental surgeon at ministry of health Uganda.
